You pick a ruleset, not a realmAgree on one ruleset with your friends before anyone creates a character; to play on another ruleset you need a new character.

In Retail In Retail you choose a realm, group with players from other realms, and can pay to move a character.

In Forever There are no realms. You choose a ruleset: Normal, PvP, Roleplaying or Roleplay-PvP, with Hardcore later. Groups, dungeons and raids work only inside one ruleset; only battlegrounds mix them. Characters cannot move to another ruleset.

PermanentOfficial#
PvP ruleset: one faction per accountAgree on a faction with your friends before you create your first character on the PvP ruleset.

In Retail In Retail you can have Horde and Alliance characters on any realm and even group across factions.

In Forever On the PvP ruleset an account can hold only one faction: once you create an Alliance character there, you cannot create a Horde one there, and the reverse. Normal, Roleplaying and Hardcore allow both. Horde and Alliance never group together.

PermanentOfficial#
Treat race, class and faction as finalChoose your class first, then a race and faction that fit it, as if you can never change them.

In Retail In Retail you can pay for a race or faction change, or boost a new character to a high level.

In Forever Forever has no paid character boost, and Blizzard has announced no race change, faction change or character transfer. Barbershops in the cities only change your looks, for some gold. Playing on another ruleset needs a new character.

PermanentEstimate#
Every character has two namesPrepare several name pairs before Early Name Reservation, and give friends both parts of your name for invites and mail.

In Retail In Retail a name only has to be unique on its realm, and friends reach you by BattleTag or by name and realm.

In Forever Each character has a first and a second name. Only the full pair must be unique, but across your whole region and every ruleset. You can hide your second name in the world (Options, Nameplates); chat still shows it.

Official#
Pick Classic or Enhanced at first loginChoose Enhanced if you want Retail-style quest markers and movement keys; you can still switch to the classic SD models later.

In Retail In Retail the modern look and interface are simply the default for everyone.

In Forever At first login you choose a preset. Enhanced: HD models, strafe keys, one-bag view, quest map markers and transmog on. Classic: SD models, camera-turning keys, quest markers off, transmog off. You can change every part later.

Buy every spell rank at your trainerVisit your trainer whenever you level, buy every new rank, and check your action bars afterwards.

In Retail In Retail your spells grow stronger on their own as you level, with nothing to buy.

In Forever Spells come in ranks that you buy from your class trainer. Ranks far below your level get less from spell power and trigger talents less often. Reports on bars differ: early beta testers saw old ranks stay, a later guide says your top-rank button updates.

Conflict#
Talent trees, and respecs cost goldPlan your build in a Forever talent calculator before you spend points, and do not respec on a whim.

In Retail In Retail you change talents for free almost anywhere and save loadouts for each situation.

In Forever Talents open at level 10 in three Classic-style trees, with one-point milestone talents at 11, 16, 21 and 31 points. You change them only at a class trainer in a major city; the price climbs fast and drops only once a week. Dual Specialization unlocks at 40.

Official#
Some core abilities come from class questsTake each class quest as soon as your trainer offers it; skipping one can leave you without a pet or totems.

In Retail In Retail every class ability arrives by itself as you level up.

In Forever Some core tools need a class quest. Shamans unlock each totem element by quest: Earth at 4, Fire at 10, Water at 20 and Air at 30. Hunters tame their first pet at level 10 through the Taming the Beast quests.

Community#
Pull one or two monsters at a timeFight one monster at a time while questing, rest between fights, and in groups let the tank pull and mark targets for crowd control.

In Retail In Retail you can gather big packs of monsters and kill them all at once with area damage.

In Forever Combat keeps the Classic pace: a normal monster takes about 10 to 15 seconds to kill alone. In dungeons, crowd control such as Polymorph, Banish, Fear and Root still matters, and damage dealers must watch their threat.

Official#
The first to hit a monster owns itWhen many players hunt the same monsters, invite them to a group: a group shares the credit.

In Retail In Retail everyone who helps kill a monster gets credit, so strangers share kills without grouping.

In Forever There is no shared tagging. The first player or group to hit a monster gets its loot, XP and quest credit. A Blizzard designer said the team must hold the line on this.

Official#
Drink and eat between fightsCarry food and water, sit down to drink after fights, and wait for your healer's mana before the next pull.

In Retail In Retail health and mana come back quickly, and you rarely stop to eat or drink.

In Forever Mana regeneration from Spirit stops for 5 seconds each time you spend mana, so casters and healers run dry. You must stay seated while eating or drinking. Rage comes from dealing and taking damage, and out of combat you lose 1.25 Rage per second.

Datamined#
Group Finder lists groups, it does not queueList as Learning for your first runs, meet your group at the dungeon entrance, and add players you liked as friends.

In Retail In Retail you queue for a random dungeon, and the game builds your group and teleports you in.

In Forever The Group Finder is a listing board: you list yourself or your group, or browse and message players, and invite by hand. Each listing needs a Playstyle: Learning, Relaxed, Competitive or Carry Offered. Nothing forms groups for you or teleports you.

Beta#
No WoW Token, no boosts, no bought goldEarn gold by playing, gathering and trading, and never accept gold from a stranger you cannot explain.Gone

In Retail In Retail you can turn money into gold with a WoW Token, pay for game time with gold, or buy a level boost.

In Forever Forever has no WoW Token and no paid character boost at launch, and no plans for either. GDKP gold-bid raids are not allowed. Blizzard punishes gold buyers as well as sellers, up to permanent account closure.

Official#
Use the Forever file of every addonPick the Forever flavor on CurseForge, back up your WTF folder, and check at character select that each addon loads.

In Retail In Retail you install an addon's Retail file, and most popular addons are ready on patch day.

In Forever Forever runs modern WoW's interface code with the same addon rules, including the secret values from Midnight that limit combat data for addons. Each addon needs a file made for Forever; Classic Era and Anniversary files do not work.

Community#
Ride at 40, and there is no flyingSave gold while you level so you can buy riding training the moment you reach 40.

In Retail In Retail you get a mount early and fly or Skyride across most of the world.

In Forever There are no flying mounts and no level scaling. Riding training costs 100 gold at level 40 and gives you your first mount; swift riding costs 1,000 gold at 60. A mount from a paid pack still needs the riding skill.

Retail word lookup

  • GoneBloodlustNot in Forever. No class has a group haste spell; Rage of the Farseer is a personal Enhancement Shaman cooldown (30% attack speed for 25 seconds).
    Do this

Plan fights without a group burst window and use your own cooldowns.

  • DifferentBattle resOnly the Druid's Rebirth (30-minute cooldown) and a Warlock's Soulstone, placed before death, bring a player back during combat.
    Do this

Agree before the pull who gets the Soulstone.

  • GoneMythic+Not in Forever. Every dungeon has one set difficulty that never scales; Blizzard does not want automatic difficulty changes.
    Do this

Run dungeons at their level range, and move on once you outgear them.

  • GoneHeroicDungeons and raids have one set difficulty each. There are no Heroic or Mythic versions.
    Do this

Treat every dungeon and raid as a single version; its loot comes from beating it.

  • GoneMythic+ scoreThere is no Mythic+, so there is no Mythic+ score. Listings carry a Playstyle tag instead, and the Recent Allies list remembers players you grouped with.
    Do this

Add players you liked as friends, or find them again in Recent Allies.

  • GoneGreat VaultNot announced for Forever: Blizzard's Forever articles describe no weekly reward chest. Gear comes from bosses, quests, PvP vendors, reputation and crafting, and raids are planned to reset weekly.
    Do this

Plan your week around raid lockouts and PvP rank progress instead.

  • DifferentDungeon FinderThere is no automatic dungeon queue. The Group Finder lists groups; you invite players yourself and travel to the entrance, and nothing teleports you.
    Do this

List your group with a Playstyle tag, or browse listings and message the leader.

  • GoneRaid FinderNo raid queue has been announced. Raids have fixed sizes (10, 20 or 40 players) and one difficulty, and you form the group yourself or through the Group Finder.
    Do this

Join a guild or a raid team early; the 10-player Barrow Deeps is the easiest to fill.

  • SamePremade Group FinderThis is the part Forever keeps: list a group or browse listings. Every listing needs a Playstyle tag: Learning, Relaxed, Competitive or Carry Offered.
    Do this

Write a clear note on your listing: your goal, your role and whether new players are welcome.

  • GoneDelvesNot announced for Forever. Small-group content means dungeons: every Classic dungeon plus nine new 5-player dungeons for levels 13 to 60.
    Do this

Look for dungeon groups in the Group Finder; alone, quest and gather instead.

  • GoneWorld QuestsNot announced for Forever. Forever adds more than a thousand new regular quests across levels 1 to 60.
    Do this

Take quests from quest givers in each zone and follow the levels in your quest log.

  • DifferentWarbandForever's account-wide progress is Legacy: challenges give points to the whole account, and each character spends up to 16 of them on perks. Collections are shared too.
    Do this

Level different classes to 25 for cheap Legacy points if you enjoy alts.

  • GoneAccount-wide reputationNot announced for Forever. Blizzard names Legacy points and collections as the account-wide parts; reputation appears to be earned on each character.
    Do this

Earn a reputation on the character that will use its rewards.

  • DifferentRenownForever uses classic reputation standings from Hated to Exalted; going from Neutral to Exalted takes 42,000 reputation.
    Do this

Check each faction's rewards and work only on the ones you need.

  • GoneCovenantsNot part of Forever. Its story is set in Azeroth's early years, after Warcraft III and before Molten Core (Blizzard).
    Do this

Leave Retail's expansion systems behind; Forever builds on the original 1-60 world.

  • DifferentAchievementsLegacy Challenges work much like achievements but focus on character progress, and each one gives a Legacy point to your account.
    Do this

Press Y to open the Legacy window and see the challenges.

  • GoneHeirloomsNot announced for Forever. Account-wide leveling help comes from Legacy perks such as Well Rested, which raises rested XP.
    Do this

Spend early Legacy points on leveling perks when you start an alt.

  • GoneParty SyncNot announced, and nothing scales levels. If a group member is far above a monster's level, nobody in the group gets XP from it.
    Do this

Level with friends of a similar level.

  • GoneLevel scalingNot in Forever: Blizzard rules out level scaling. Zones and dungeons keep fixed levels.
    Do this

Quest in zones that match your level, and move on when quests turn gray.

  • GoneSkyridingNo flying mounts at all. You ride on the ground, with basic mounts from level 40 and swift mounts from level 60.
    Do this

Save gold for riding while you level, and learn flight paths as you travel.

  • DifferentItem levelItem level is hidden in the game: no average on the character sheet and no item level line on tooltips. Judge items by their stats.
    Do this

Hover an item to see the stat changes, and compare them with your spec's priorities.

  • GoneCatalystNot announced for Forever. Gear, including the new raid tier sets, comes from drops, quests, vendors and crafting.
    Do this

Keep the items you earn; plan set pieces around the raids that drop them.

  • GoneUpgrade tracksNot announced for Forever. The one upgrade Blizzard has described is in PvP: an Emboldened Seal turns a blue PvP piece into its epic version, with a rank requirement.
    Do this

Replace gear with better drops; in PvP, plan which seals your rank unlocks.

  • DifferentCrafting ordersForever's orders are Craftsman's Writs: orders that you fill and hand in to your trade faction, the Azeroth Commerce Authority (Alliance) or Durotar Supply and Logistics (Horde). For a player-made item, ask a crafter directly.
    Do this

Ask crafters in chat or your guild; bring the materials and offer a tip.

  • DifferentCrafting qualityForever professions use skill points up to 300 in four ranks, Apprentice to Artisan. Blizzard's profession summary mentions no quality ranks or knowledge points.
    Do this

Level a profession with recipes that still give skill points; the Professions window (K) shows which ones do.

  • DifferentWar ModeThere is no War Mode switch. Your ruleset decides world PvP: on Normal and Roleplaying you fight only when you choose; on the PvP ruleset contested land is always dangerous.
    Do this

Pick a ruleset that matches how much world PvP you want; characters cannot move later.

  • GoneArenaNot announced for Forever. PvP progression is Honor plus a seasonal 14-rank track, earned in battlegrounds and PvP quests.
    Do this

Queue for battlegrounds and climb the ranks each season.

  • DifferentConquestHonor buys PvP gear (you can hold up to 25,000), and Rank Points move you through 14 ranks per season, with a weekly cap.
    Do this

Spend Honor before you reach the cap, and earn Rank Points every week.

  • DifferentBattleground queueYou queue at battlemasters in the capital cities; for Darkspear Islands also at its faction bases in the Barrens. Battlegrounds can mix players from different rulesets, except Hardcore.
    Do this

Queue from a capital city, or from the Darkspear Islands bases when you are in the Barrens.

  • GoneCross-factionHorde and Alliance can never group in Forever.
    Do this

Make sure your friends pick the same faction as you.

  • DifferentConnected realmsThere are no realms: each region has one layered world per ruleset (Normal, PvP, Roleplaying, Roleplay-PvP; Hardcore later). Groups and raids stay inside one ruleset.
    Do this

Agree on a ruleset with your friends before creating characters.

  • GoneCharacter transferCharacters cannot move between rulesets; you need a new character there. The only exception is a Hardcore character that dies.
    Do this

Create each character on the ruleset where you want to keep playing it.

  • GoneFaction changeNot announced for Forever. Barbershops in the cities change your looks for some gold, but not your race or faction.
    Do this

Pick race and faction as if they were final.

  • GoneWoW TokenNo WoW Token at launch and no plans for one. Buying gold from sellers is punished, for buyers too.
    Do this

Pay for game time with money, and earn gold only by playing.

  • GoneLevel boostNo paid character boost at launch and no plans for one.
    Do this

Level each character yourself; Legacy perks help later characters.

  • GoneDeath KnightNot in Forever. The nine classes are Druid, Hunter, Mage, Paladin, Priest, Rogue, Shaman, Warlock and Warrior.
    Do this

Pick one of the nine classes; each one is open to both factions.

  • GoneAllied racesForever has the original eight races plus one new race, the Skyborne. Blizzard says it has no plans to add races from modern WoW.
    Do this

Choose from the races at character creation; the Skyborne need a paid pack.

  • GonePet battlesNot in Forever: pets are account-wide companions only, and the pet battle interface is switched off.
    Do this

Collect pets for show; they do not fight.

  • GonePlayer housingNot in Forever. The housing decor in the Forever packs is for modern WoW. A developer said he would love to bring housing to the Classic world some day: a wish, not a plan.
    Do this

Enjoy camping instead: campfires are Forever's social places to rest.

  • DifferentTransmogTransmog is opt-in: you can switch it off at a transmogrifier and still collect appearances. Same armor type only, and high-level looks wait until level 60.
    Do this

Decide at a transmogrifier whether you want it on.

  • SameMount journalMounts, pets, toys, titles and appearances are account-wide across rulesets; Hardcore only shares outward.
    Do this

Collect as you play; your other characters share the collection.

  • GoneHero talentsNot part of Forever's talents as Blizzard describes them: three Classic-style trees per class, with one-point milestone talents at 11, 16, 21 and 31 points.
    Do this

Read your class's three trees in a Forever talent calculator.

  • DifferentTalent loadoutsChanging talents costs gold at a class trainer in a major city; the price climbs quickly and only drops once a week. Dual Specialization unlocks at level 40, for a cost.
    Do this

Plan builds before you respec, and buy dual spec at 40 if you play two roles.

  • SameEdit ModeForever has modern WoW's Edit Mode; layouts are saved separately for keyboard and gamepad.
    Do this

Open Edit Mode from the game menu (Esc) to arrange your interface, and use Share to keep a copy of your layout.

  • SameCooldown ManagerBuilt in for all classes, racials and trinkets, but switched off by default. A spell's ranks count as one entry.
    Do this

Turn it on under Options, Gameplay Enhancements, then type /cdm to pick spells.

  • SamePingsForever has modern WoW's ping system, with Assist, Attack, Warning and On My Way pings.
    Do this

Bind a key to Ping under Keybindings, Ping System.

  • SameDetails!Forever has a built-in Damage Meter (off by default), and Details! has a Forever file. In combat, addons can show combat values but not calculate with them.
    Do this

Turn on the built-in meter in Options, or install the Forever file of Details!.

  • GoneWeakAurasWeakAuras has no Forever file from its own team; only unofficial forks exist. Forever's addon rules hide many combat values from addons.
    Do this

Use the built-in Cooldown Manager to track your cooldowns and buffs.

  • DifferentDeadly Boss ModsBoth load in Forever, but on 25 Oct 2026 neither had boss timers for Forever's encounters. Blizzard says the new encounters start with simple mechanics.
    Do this

Install one if you like, but learn each boss from a short guide for now.

  • GoneDungeon JournalThe Forever client does not load the Dungeon Journal, and item stats stay hidden until players loot them.
    Do this

Use a guide site for boss tips, and expect loot lists to fill in after launch.

  • DifferentHearthstone10-second cast and a 1-hour cooldown. Speak to an innkeeper to change your home.
    Do this

Set your home at an inn close to where you will quest next.

  • DifferentAuction HouseForever's Auction House lists gear by the level needed to equip it, not by item level, and shows the real stats of 'of the ...' items (Blizzard, 15 Oct 2026). Auctionator has a Forever file.
    Do this

Scan with Auctionator before you sell; on a new market, its price history starts empty.

  • SameWeekly resetAll three launch raids are planned to reset each week. Blizzard has not announced the reset day and hour for any region yet.
    Do this

Check the reset time in launch week before you plan raid nights.

  • DifferentShardingForever calls them layers. Joining a group moves you to the group's layer after a short countdown, and you cannot accept a 'refresh world' prompt in combat.
    Do this

Group with friends to end up in the same layer.

First-week checklist

Tick items as you go. Ticks stay in this browser only.

  1. Why

Groups, dungeons and raids only work inside one ruleset, and characters cannot move to another ruleset later.

  2. Why

Once you create a character of one faction on the PvP ruleset, you cannot create the other faction there.

  3. Why

Forever has no paid boost, and no race change, faction change or character transfer has been announced.

  4. Why

Early Name Reservation opens for pack owners on 27 Oct 2026 (28 Oct in Korea and Taiwan); This week shows the hour in your own time. Up to 3 characters across all rulesets; only the full name pair must be unique in your region.

  5. Why

Forever uses modern WoW's addon rules, and Classic Era or Anniversary addon files do not work.

  6. Why

Blizzard punishes buyers as well as sellers. A suspected account gets a Temporary Economy Hold: no trade, mail, guild bank or Auction House until it is checked.

  7. Why

It decides which players you meet, not your game language. It is account-wide and has a 24-hour cooldown.

  8. Why

Enhanced turns on strafe keys, quest map markers, the one-bag view, HD models and transmog. You can change every setting later.

  9. Why

All three are off by default in the Forever client. Type /cdm to choose which spells the Cooldown Manager shows.

  10. Why

Both are off in the Forever client's default settings. Your first-login preset may change some settings, so check.

  11. Why

The three secondary professions do not use a profession slot. Cooked food gives a small XP bonus, and Cooking also lets you place campfires.

  12. Why

Reports differ on whether a new rank replaces the old one on your bars, and ranks far below your level lose spell power.

  13. Why

There is no shared tagging: only the first player or group to hit a monster gets loot, XP and quest credit.

  14. Why

Most cooked food gives Well Fed with +5% XP from kills for about 15 minutes; the buff ends if you die.

  15. Why

Some core tools come from quests: Shaman totem elements at 4, 10, 20 and 30, and the Hunter's first pet at 10.

  16. Why

Changing talents later costs gold at a class trainer in a major city, and the price climbs fast and only drops once a week.

  17. Why

Dungeon quests give extra XP beyond normal quests, and there are no summoning stones to bring you there.

  18. Why

Most players earn their first account-wide Legacy point at 25, and each character can spend up to 16 points on perks.

  19. Why

The training includes your first mount. Swift riding at level 60 costs 1,000 gold.

  20. Why

Every raider needs the Drakefire Amulet in their bags, and the raids open on 9 Dec 2026.
